ABOUT THE TEACHING ROOM
Learn by making music.
The Teaching Room is an in-person music education studio in Edmonton focused on music production, songwriting and mixing for Rap, R&B and Pop.
Our approach is simple: keep the groups small, focus on practical skills and teach through the process of actually making music.
Rather than spending hours on information you may never use, we focus on understanding the decisions that matter when you’re producing a record, writing a song or building a mix.
SMALL GROUPS. MORE FEEDBACK.
Our core courses are limited to a maximum of four people.
That means more time to ask questions, work through problems and get direct feedback on what you’re creating.
The goal is to make the experience feel closer to working inside a studio than sitting in a traditional classroom.
PRACTICAL, NOT JUST THEORETICAL
We believe the best way to understand music is to work with it.
You’ll hear concepts explained, see them demonstrated and then apply them yourself.
Whether you’re developing a chord progression, building a chorus, choosing sounds or balancing a mix, the focus is always on understanding why a decision works and how to use it in your own music.
REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE
The Teaching Room brings together decades of professional music and teaching experience.
Umesh Sahajpal brings more than 20 years of experience in music production and audio, more than a decade of college-level teaching, and television placements across TLC, Discovery+, BET and CTV.
The goal is to make that experience useful, understandable and applicable to the music you’re working on.
BUILT FOR MODERN MUSIC
Our courses are designed specifically around the way contemporary Rap, R&B and Pop records are created.
That means learning the musical, creative and technical skills that actually come together in a modern production:
Melody. Chords. Lyrics. Sound selection. Arrangement. Production. Mixing.
Not as isolated subjects, but as parts of the same creative process.
IN PERSON. IN THE STUDIO.
Everything at The Teaching Room is taught in person in Edmonton.
Being in the room allows you to hear the differences, ask questions as they come up and work through ideas together in real time.
No prerecorded course library. No large lecture hall.
Just focused, hands-on learning in a professional studio environment.
MAKE BETTER RECORDS.
Whether you want to improve your production, strengthen your songwriting or develop your mixing, The Teaching Room is built around helping you better understand the process behind the music you want to make.
